Paintings
When painting, I enjoy colour and the freedom in the process of creating an image. I use acrylic paint, which dries fast, so I can quickly change and move things around.
For a painting I never have a plan. I might start with a table scene and end up with birds in a garden. Or I might have the idea of a yellow painting and end up with a blue one. Painting is a dialogue for me. I add something to the canvas that affects the image in a certain way, to which I have to respond. As well certain shapes, colors and patterns that occur on the canvas evoke images in me. These images then go onto the canvas and the process continues. Slowly, hopefully, something emerges on the canvas that gives me a direction to follow and to finish. Overpainting and working in layers is an essential part of my art. I use a lot of stripes, dots and scratching into wet paint. This creates complex, unpredictable colours and tones because the previous layer can shine through. As well it sometimes allows earlier imagery still to be detected.
I mostly paint on wood panels because they have a sturdier surface to scratch on and I like the feeling of putting paint on wood. Recently I have begun to carve with my woodcutting tools into the wood and into coloured areas. Another layer and very interesting! I will explore this further.
